Laurie is a visual artist who creates paintings, laser cut jewelry, and many works made from cut paper ranging from small pieces to gallery sized installations. The cut paper installations and small works focus on time, language, and improvisation.
In Laurie’s work line becomes sculpture. Shadow becomes drawing. Processes bleed into one another as do mediums – these are the systems. She is interested in the immediacy of a mark being extracted over a long period of time. Stopping it for a moment, letting it move someplace else. There are questions that lead to more questions. Perhaps imagery asks questions in ways words cannot. Since her work is physical, it can turned over and be looked at from both sides.
Laurie is equally committed to process and concept, as she strives to figure out how they can work together. The resulting work is skeletal, alien, organic, playful, emotional, nostalgic but present. Within her art she honors error, and strives tirelessly toward a balance between questions and answers.
